The Vera Chase Showcase — Celebrating Young Bahamian Voices
Designed especially for writers under 21, the Vera Chase Showcase offers students and emerging authors a platform to shine—continuing the legacy of Vera Poitier Chase (1937–2024).
Vera Poitier Chase was a retired banker turned historian, author, researcher, and dedicated mentor. After 36 years in banking, she immersed herself in Bahamian history—serving as President of the Commonwealth Writers of The Bahamas and championing student writers .
Vera authored Take Me Back to Guanahani and Pirates Paradise—short fiction grounded in Bahamian lore—and later wrote Islands My Islands, Collage of Dreams, and Tommy the Classroom Mouse .
Her warmth and passion were captured forever in a stunning portrait by Bahamian photographer Duke Wells, taken as part of the acclaimed Bahamian Project and unveiled at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas .

“I am in love with Bahamian history.”
— Vera Poitier Chase
